Note:

  • Do remember to change the IKC papers in to your name.
  • Remember that pet insurance is important so look into it for your dog/puppy.
  • Ensure to register your pets microchip details ask your breeder or vet for more information.
  • Budget is important the boxer is a large breed and needs lots of feeding, kennel, secure area to run in, training aids, vet bills etc.
  • Many rescue centres and shelters have boxers/pups looking for a loving home so remember them also.
  • Don't buy the cheapest dog/pup you come across - nine out of ten times it will cost you much more in the long term.
  • To avoid unwanted puppies neuter/spay your dog/puppy.
  • Do keep in touch with the breeder.

Only when  you have fully researched the Boxer Breed and are 100% confident that this is the right breed for you (see our page Want a Boxer?), then should you go about sourcing a reputable and experienced breeder.

Sourcing a Breeder:

Contacting the Irish Kennel Club (www.ikc.ie) for a list of breeders.
Word of mouth is still a great way so ask around.
Many show & reputable breeders have websites so search the Internet!

Visiting a Breeder:

Note the breeder should be friendly, knowledgeable of the breed and experienced as well as very welcoming.
Their should be good interaction between the breeder and the dogs/pups.
Don't be alarmed if the breeder asks you lot of questions - reputable breeders care about the home environment they are placing there pups in.
Ask the breeder any questions that you may have - write them down before visiting so that you remember them all.

Viewing the Puppies/dogs:

The puppies/dogs should have adequate heat, space, food, kennel, area to play in, look in good health, be very well socialised and trained.
Ensure you see the dam and sire (if dam was taken out to stud ask to visit the stud owner).
Ensure you see the dam with the puppies.
Many breeders don't allow people to see the pups until they have had their first vaccination which is usually at 6weeks to avoid the spread of infection/disease.
The whelping area should be clean and spacious enough for both the puppies and the dam.
Ask how many litters the dam has had and how many pups where in the litter.
Ask to see all paperwork and vet check cert and vaccine records of the pups/dogs.
Observe the pups they should be alert and playful not withdrawn or unsocial.
The dam should be friendly or depending on the temperament she may be protective so respect that they are her pups and only handle pups when it is safe to do so.
If you decide to buy a pup do not take the pup until s/he is ready to go usually around eight weeks old.
Ask to confirm what guaranteed you have with the puppy and what comes with the puppy i.e IKC, pedigree, micro-chip details etc.
Ask any question that you feel is appropraite for you as a potential owner see our F.A.Q page for more information.

Do's & D'onts:

Don't ever buy a puppy from the side of the road or a car park.
Do view the puppies with the dam & sire (if possible).
Don't ever send a deposit without seeing the pups/dogs.
Do get your new puppy vet checked for your own piece of mind.
Do write down questions you have and gather information from the breeder on what you will need when collecting your puppy, settling in your puppy, feeding your puppy, worming your puppy, vaccinating your puppy, training your puppy etc.
Do ensure that the breeder you are buying from has clean spacious and adequate facilities for caring for and breeding from their dogs.
Remember is things dont add up or if in doubt then don't buy from the breeder as be guided by gut instinct.

Finally!!
Do enjoy your boxer as a puppy as they grow big very fast!!!
